How to Measure a Spring for Replacement or a Quote

Steps
- Measure wire diameter. Use a micrometer or vernier caliper on the bare wire, at two or three points, and average the readings.
- Measure outer diameter. Measure across the widest part of the coil. Inner diameter can be measured too if the spring runs over a rod.
- Measure free length. Measure the unloaded length of a compression spring; for an extension spring measure inside the hooks.
- Count the coils. Count total coils and note which end coils are closed or ground; active coils are the rest.
- Note ends, winding direction and material. Record end style (closed, ground, hooks, legs), left or right hand winding, and whether it is mild steel, stainless steel or music wire.
- Send the details. Send measurements plus photos and the load or working requirement to get a quote.
